As the initial furor over the Aug. 5 mine wastewater deluge into the Animas River has slowly settled, so have potentially toxic heavy metals — leaving the possibilities for long-range impact literally lining the riverbed. Click here to read about the long lasting effects this spill, which traveled over 75 miles down stream, will have on the water and fish of the Animas River.
Make sure this never happens to the Smith River. Let the DEQ and Governor Steve Bullock know that opening a copper mine on Sheep Creek, only 17 miles upstream from the Smith River, is a bad idea and that the Smith River is too important to risk.
